WINNERS
INTERVIEW
Amélie MAURESMO defeated PATTY SCHNYDER
6-7
6-4 6-3
(Wednesday,
20 January, 1999)
Q.
Is that one of your best wins?
A.
Yeah.
Q.
The best?
A.
No, it's not the best, but it's one of the best.
I'm very happy to win, and to have this win over
a Top Ten player, and I think it's good for the
rest of the tournament.
Q.
The wins at Berlin were still bigger than that,
were they?
A.
Yes.
Q.
That was against - - -?
A.
Davenport and Novotna and Van Roost.
Q.
Did you feel that there was an extra level of confidence
that you had today, that you didn't have maybe in
the second half of last year?
A.
Yeah, I think today I felt very well physically,
so that bring me confidence, so I knew I can, I
can keep my level up until the end of the match
without any problems, so that gives me confidence
there. And with my shots, I'm confident on this
surface.
Q.
What do you know about Nicole Pratt, next round?
A.
Nothing. She's Australian.
Q.
Yes
A.
No, I don't know. I don't know how she plays actually.
She won today?
Q.
Yes?
A.
Who to?
Q.
Sam Smith?
A.
Oh, yeah. No, I don't know. I'll see.
Q.
At what stage did you get the feeling that she was
beatable, or was that something all the way through
the match?
A.
From the beginning I think we had close match, you
know, we were both really close; so from the beginning
it could go her way or my way, so I took a chance.
From the beginning, from the start, yeah.
Q.
When you were winning the junior Grand Slams, did
you have a timetable for when you expected to be
beating Top Ten players?
A.
Not really, no, no. I was just working, expecting
this to happen, but I didn't know really when it
was going to happen. It came in Berlin; it comes
again today. So I'm very happy. I think I have to
keep working hard, and see how we go then.
