Thursday, June 2, 2000

A. MAURESMO/K. Hrdlickova 6-1, 6-0

Q. Yesterday you were criticizing yourself, but today it's difficult to find any criticism against you.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yes, I'm very pleased with my match today, and that's it. There's not much to say unless that I am increasing my power little by little.

Q. The conditions were what you preferred?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yes, the conditions were a hundred times better than yesterday - the court, the balls, the atmosphere. I took advantage of it.

Q. Do you believe she was impressed, because she made quite a few unforced errors?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I think she doesn't like my game at all. I give her trouble. In Rome it was a bit the same thing. I was mixing it up. I was playing deep. She had problems going into the court. This is what she was trying to do, so I prevented her from doing it.

Q. The next match, how are you approaching it? I suppose you are impatient.

AMELIE MAURESMO: It's going to be a revenge after the Rome finals. I think Alexia is on the court watching. I was able to analyze the match I lost last time. I know she's a very good player. I will give my best and we'll see what the result will be.

Q. We talked a lot about the many French players in the third round, but today three of them lost, Nathalie Tauziat, Sandrine Testud, important ones. Do you believe at one stage of the tournament, the French women players find it too difficult?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, the coincidence is that it's French players, but it could have been other players. I don't think it's specific to the French players. I didn't watch their matches, so I don't know really how it happened. I think one match was very close, for Sandrine. I can't say more than that.

What I'm interested in is my own tournament.

Q. The reaction is more negative or positive for a French player here?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I think you have to change the negative part into a positive part. I went into the court having reference points. I knew what I had to do. I was relaxed from the beginning. For me things went well today.

But it can change from one day to the next. We never know beforehand. We try to manage things as best as we can, but it's not always easy.
