(May 15th Berlin 98)

MAURESMO ENJOYS BREAKTHROUGH IN BERLIN

Former World Junior Champion Amélie Mauresmo of France yesterday continued the best week of her young career by reaching the quarterfinals of an event on the COREL WTA TOUR for the first time.

The 18 year old qualifier despatched World No 2 Lindsay Davenport 6-2, 6-4 in the third round, to follow victories over 12th seed and World No 14, Dominique Van Roost and 43rd-ranked Florencia Labat.

Mauresmo first attracted attention when she won the French Open and Wimbledon junior titles in 1996 and was named Junior World Champion. She broke into the world's Top 100 in January 1998 and went on to reach the third round of the Australian Open, her best Grand Slam performance to date. She currently stands at a career-high No 65.

On yesterday's win, Mauresmo said: "I covered a lot of ground today and kept the ball in play. I mixed it up well and made her play more shots. I have worked a lot with my coach and my results are coming. I think I have got more used to the clay in recent weeks and I feel more confident in myself. I never give up and that's what I've improved a lot."
