PARIS - Feb-14 -- French star Amélie Mauresmo
says the top women's tennis player in the world,
Martina Hingis, was "out of line" on her remarks
about Mauresmo's homosexuality.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the
Australian Open -- where Mauresmo lost to Hingis
in the final -- the 19-year-old vowed to ignore
the focus on her sexuality and seek to win a Grand
Slam event this year.
"Hingis was stupid for what she said," Mauresmo
said Saturday. "She was out of line. But I respect
her and I think she respects me. I don't have
a lot to say about it. It is her problem."
Before the final of the Australian Open, Hingis
was reported to have said "she's here with her
girlfriend, she's half a man," when asked about
her opponent. Hingis denied making the remark.
