Never one to waste a golden opportunity, Mauresmo
cruised past American Tara Snyder 6-3, 6-3 in
one hour, 14 minutes. Entertaining an adoring
Court Central crowd, Mauresmo played a fairly
consistent, heady match that saw her win 19 out
of 25 net approaches and knock off seven forehand
winners.
"I was a bit tense in the beginning. I had the
opportunity to break her in the first game and
missed it," said the 18th-ranked Mauresmo. "
At 3-3 I started to go for it and then I was able
to play well. It's not easy because this is the
first time I came into this tournament with good
results and people were excepting things from
me.
Now I'm got myself in the tournament and I like
my chances."
Due to Hingis' disparaging remarks about Mauresmo's
sexuality prior to their 1999 Australian Open
final (which was won by Hingis), Mauresmo and
Hingis have developed an intense rivalry.
"I think I will have my chances and I will be
very motivated and pumped up," said Mauresmo,
who won their next meeting in February at the
Open Gaz de France in front of nearly riotous
crowd. "It will be good match. Maybe the top seeds
are better to play in the early rounds than later.
I like my chances."
When asked whether she still thinks about Hingis'
comments, the quiet and polite Mauresmo said,
"Since people are still talking about it, it still
exists. My motivation will be at a maximum and
[the incident] is going to be part of my motivation."
Hingis said she is ready to rumble. "Its going
to be a good match. I expect a lot from it. The
crowd will be a big issue. It's going to be more
like a soccer match....I love it. I can't play
if there is no one watching."
The cocky 18-year-old Swiss added that she will
try not to get rattled. "I definitely prefer having
the crowd on my side," When we played at the Paris
Open, it was that way. I'll just try not to give
the crowd much chance to clap too much for her.
I'm sureit's going to be a big thing, so I know
what to expect."
