PARIS - No doubts about Martina Hingis. She showed
she clearly deserves her top ranking with a 6-3,
6-3 victory over Amelie Mauresmo.
The match recalled the Australian Open final
in which Hingis said the muscular Frenchwoman
was ``half a man.'' Mauresmo acknowledges being
gay.
The fans at Roland Garros remembered. Some booed
when the Swiss star questioned a call, and even
when she walked off court. Hingis smiled through
much of the match as she often does, seemingly
unaffected.
Hingis made fewer errors and hitting sharper,
smarter shots. She was broken only once, in the
first set, and broke Mauresmo five times in the
match.
